We have returned home and we are going through our many pictures (around 700). We had a wonderful visit to your beautiful country and I must say that working with you and the tour guides made it even more special. When we return to that side of the world, we will be contacting you again. We still need to come to Guilin and see the beautiful sights that you see every day.

Angela was great. She is a pleasant and pretty young lady and she knows so much about the sights in Chengdu. My son really liked talking to her.

Peter was very good but his English can use some improvement. He was extremely patient with us and accommodated our needs wonderfully.

May was also very good and professional. It is obvious she knows her subject and she is a great sales person.

I look forward to using your services again. Thank you for everything and thank you for the gift. It is hanging on the wall in my home. I think of you every time I see it.

A major city of the east coast, Gangneung (강릉) is regarded as one of Korea's top summer destinations, owing in part to its wide sandy beaches. Its well-preserved traditions, historical relics, and tourist services have made it a popular school fieldtrip spot, but history buffs may know it best as the home of the Gangneung Danoje Festival, designated a UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2005. The Danoje Festival is rich with ceremonies and rituals, traditional folk games, and other major cultural attributes that have remained relatively unchanged since ancient times. International interest in the city has continued to grow since the festival’s UNESCO designation and an increasing number of tourists visit Gangneung each year.

From Seoul, Gangneung is only three hours away by bus. Since the coastal city is bordered by mountains to the west and the sea to the east, the city generally enjoys milder winters and relatively cooler summers than the rest of Korea.

A vacationer’s delight, the city offers mountains, a lush recreational forest, a ranch, and ski resorts. Not to be overlooked is the local cuisine; Gangneung is known for fresh dishes made with locally grown potatoes, buckwheat, and cabbage. Gangneung offers something for everyone—beautiful beaches, refreshing pine tree forests, traditional culture, and much more!

     Major Tourist Attractions

Gangneung is as much a city of culture, history, and art as it is a coastal city. The hanok residence Seongyojang, which is over 300 years old, shows the beauty and elegance of Korea's traditional architecture, as does Ojukheon, home of a leading painter and scholar during the 16th century. The timeworn beauty of the buildings is accentuated by the splendid natural surroundings of the neighboring pine trees, beaches, and lake.

     Seongyojang House

The residence of an upper class yangban (nobleman) of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), Seongyojang House (선교장) is a great example of Korea's traditional architectural style. In particular, the pond and pavilion located just past the front gate are quintessential examples of Korean traditional gardens. The house was built by a descendant of Prince Hyoryeong Daegun in 1703 and has been inhabited by his descendents ever since. With a total area of 1,051.24m², the residence is subdivided into numerous sections, including the Anchae (women's quarter) and Sarangchae (men's quarter). The Yeolhwadang (master’s quarters) were refurbished as a library and are open to the public. Visitors can make a reservation for hands-on traditional culture programs or an overnight stay.

     Ojukheon House

One of the top historical relics in Gangneung is Ojukheon (오죽헌). This peaceful abode was once the home of Sin Saimdang (1504-1551), the mother figure of Korea, and the birthplace of Yulgok Yi Yi (1536-1584), the son of Sin Saimdang and a noted scholar of the Joseon Era. The building was named after the black bamboo trees that surrounded the house ('o' means black and 'juk' means bamboo). Inside is Mongryongsil, the room where Yulgok was born; Munseongsa, where the portrait of Yulgok is kept; Eojaegak, where Yulgok's works and mementos are kept; Yulgok Memorial Hall, exhibiting the family's relics; and the Gangneung Municipal Museum. Visitors might recognize Sinsaimdang as the person on the Korean 50,000won bill and Yi Yi and Ojukheon from the 5,000won bill.

     Gyeongpodae Pavilion

Located on a hill overlooking the Gyeongpoho Lake, Gyeongpodae (경포대) is a traditional Korean-style pavilion perfect for sitting back and enjoying the scenery. A cool breeze typically blows in off the sea, gently rustling the branches of the trees surrounding the pavilion. This serene hideout is also a popular place for watching the sunrise or the moonlight reflecting off the neighboring lake.

     Daegwallyeong Recreational Forest

The first recreational forest in Korea, Daegwallyeong (대관령) offers visitors a natural escape into the heart of nature. Old pine trees, magnificent valleys and rocks, and expansive fields of green overcome the boundaries of age and touch the hearts of visitors of all ages. Daegwallyeong is considered one of the most beautiful forests in Korea, if not the most beautiful. Follow the forest path to explore the thatched cottage covered with yellow earth, the watermill, and more.

Chamsori Gramophone & Edison Science Museum

Celebrating the theme of sound, the museum is home to both the Chamsori (참소리) Gramophone Museum, which shows the history of gramophones, as well as the Edison Science Museum, which showcases a majority of Thomas Edison’s original inventions. In terms of collection size, with about 7,000 pieces that include music boxes, gramophones, radios, TVs, automobiles, and other items invented by Edison, the museum is the world's largest private Edison Museum. There is even a section of the museum where visitors can try the gramophones for themselves, using the same type of old coins that were originally used to operate these impressive machines.

     Haslla Art World

Located along the mountainside, Haslla Art World is a large art garden. Stroll along the pine tree-lined to explore the various themed sections: the Garden of Pine Trees, the Garden of Time, and the Garden of the Sea. Each bend brings with it new delights: captivating views of the East Sea, and various sculptures and installations made from stone, wood, soil or other natural materials. Next to Haslla Art World is the Haslla Museum Hotel. This unique hotel faces out towards the sea and was designed by a couple who work as sculptors. The hotel grounds and the interiors of each room are filled with beautiful works of art, masterfully designed right down to the beds and sinks!

     Local foods & festivals

Made using fresh, locally-produced ingredients, the food of Gangneung is simple, but refreshing. In the winter, a hot bowl of Chodang Sundubu is just the thing to warm you up; and in summer, you’ll find yourself craving a cold bowl of Dongchimi Makguksu noodles. One of the best ways to get a sampling of the local flavors is with a visit to the Gangneung Danoje Festival, a celebration embracing the traditions, food, and culture of this proud seaside community. Held on the fifth day of the fifth month by the lunar calendar, the Danoje Festival of Gangneung is a designated UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Visit the Gangneung Danoje Festival or the New Year Sunrise Festival to make your trip to the area an even more memorable experience.

     Chodang Sundubu (soft tofu)

The first food that automatically comes to mind when hearing Gangneung is Chodang Sundubu (초당순두부), the local soft tofu made with quality beans and purified sea water. The name "Chodang" comes from the Chodang-dong District where clusters of Chodang Sundubu restaurants are located. Soft and flavorful, Chodang Sundubu is a healthy dish loved by all.

     Gamjajeon, Gamjatteok, Gamja Ongsimi

Gangwon-do, the province in which Gangneung is located, is a major producer of potatoes (“gamja”/감자 in Korean). Potatoes in this region are cultivated at high altitudes where the temperatures are cool. These prime conditions give the potatoes of Gangneung a particularly delicious taste. As a result, you will find no end to the number of dishes in the Daegwallyeong region that are made using these special spuds. There’s Gamjajeon (감자전, finely grated pan-fried potatoes combined with starch and veggies), Gamjatteok (감자떡, small, dough-and-potato rice cakes), and Gamja Ongsimi (감자옹심이, dumpling soup made of ground potato balls). Pick from among these and other dishes for a fresh, starchy treat.

     Dongchimi Makguksu

Dongchimi Makguksu (동치미 막국수) is made using some of the special products of the Gangneung mountain areas: buckwheat and radishes. Translated as “rough noodles,” Makguksu is made of unhulled buckwheat flour and served in a chilled broth of Dongchimi, a type of winter-season kimchi made from large cubes of radish.

     Gangneung Danoje Festival

Designated a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Gangneung Danoje Festival (강릉 단오제) is a celebration of the traditional folk games and food enjoyed on the occasion of Dano Day (the fifth day of the fifth month by the lunar calendar). The festival features important cultural events and ceremonies that have all but been lost throughout the rest of the Korean peninsula. One such rite is the Danogut, an exorcist ritual performed by one of the area’s leading female shaman to ensure the health and happiness of the local people. Also not to be missed is the Gwanno Mask Dance, which depicts the relationship between the upper-class nobleman (“yangban”) and the commoners (“nobi”).

     Sunrise Festival

From December 31st to January 1st of every year, people gather all along the East Coast of Korea to welcome in the first sunrise of the New Year. As the sun’s rays peek over the horizon, the atmosphere turns solemn as those gathered begin to make their wishes, pray for health, and offer other New Year’s greetings. The most popular places to celebrate the New Year are the Gyeongpo Sunrise Festival, which is held in Gyeongpo Beach in Gangneung, and the Jeongdongjin Sunrise Festival in Jeongdongjin, the location of the seaside train station. Many festivals include turning over an hourglass at midnight on the last day of the year, as well as a variety of other ceremonies and performances.
