Kurashiki

Kurashiki can be roughly translated as "town of storehouses" for that the city served as an important rice distribution center the rice storehouses. Nowadays, many of Kurashiki's former storehouses have been converted into museums, boutiques and cafes. It is also renowned a beautifully preserved historical town with a canal area that dates back to the Edo Period (1603-1867) and Japan's premier destination for denim.

Ohara Museum of Art

The Ohara Museum of Art (大原美術館 Ōhara Bijutsukan?) in Kurashiki was the first collection of Western art to be permanently exhibited in Japan. The museum opened in 1930 and originally consisted almost entirely of French paintings and sculptures of the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection has now expanded to include paintings of the Italian Renaissance and of the Dutch and Flemish 17th century. Well-known American and Italian artists of the 20th century are also included in the collection.

Kurashiki Canal

Gangukan (Japanese Folk Toys Museum)

The Japanese Folk Toys Museum is located in a repurposed rice kura (storehouse) in the popular town-walking destination Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter. The museum features about 5,000 toys made in various parts of Japan from the 1600s to the 1980s.

Momotaro Karakuri Hakubutsukan Museum

At this extraordinary museum, only articles related to the folk tale “Momotaro” are on display. The museum is full of fun attractions such as the amazing demon-infested caves of “Onigashima” (Demon Island), karakuri optical illusion gimmicks, and Momotaro animations. Visitors will also find numerous Momotaro goods in the museum shop. The more unusual one-of-a-kind Momotaro goods make for great souvenirs.

Kurashiki Ivy Square

Ivy Square is a complex of brick buildings covered in ivy that include museums, restaurants and a hotel. The area was the site of the first modern cotton mill in Japan, and the brick buildings were originally built as part of the mill in 1889. During the Edo Period (1603-1867), before the construction of the mill, the site was used as the office of the local magistrate, who exercised control of the city as a direct representative of the shogunate.

Achi Shrine

The shrine is charged with ensuring road and maritime safety, beauty and health, the arts and commerce. This may seem like a lot to place on one institution but when you look at Kurashiki past and present, it makes perfect sense.

Seto O Hashi Bridge

The world's longest two-tiered bridge system, the Seto Ohashi, is an architectural feat visible from space that took a decade to build. It connects Kurashiki in Okayama Prefecture on Honshu with five islands by both road and rail, ending up in the city of Sakaide on Shikoku .

Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter

The town of Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture, facing the Seto Inland Sea, is one of the largest industrial towns in Western Japan, as well as a sightseeing city that preserves the atmosphere of olden day Japan. Building structures constructed in different eras from the 17th to 20th centuries are preserved without being washed away by the waves of time, to form a retro-modern town that attracts many tourists.

Mt. Washu

Mount Washu is a small mountain, and is located about 20 km south of central Kurashiki city.The height is 133 meters and is on a small peninsula extending into Seto Inland Sea.There are two observarories near the top. The view at the observatories is very nice.
